Welcome to Kowanyama
The ABF Future Immortals Tour received a warm and heartfelt welcome to Kowanyama on Thursday evening, with a special dinner at the Blue Café hosted by the community’s Elders, Councillors, and Mayor.
The evening marked the official start of the tour’s visit to the “Place of Many Waters” — a region renowned for its strong cultural heritage and deep connection to Country. The welcome dinner provided an opportunity for the team to meet with Kowanyama’s leaders, exchange stories, and learn more about the community’s history, traditions, and aspirations.
Son of the great Arthur Beetson, Kristian Beetson spoke of his gratitude for the hospitality shown and the privilege of being invited to share in the community’s time and space. “Being welcomed by the Elders and Council is a true honour for our player partners and support team. It’s more than a meal — it’s the beginning of building genuine connections and understanding the heart of Kowanyama,” Beetson said.
The evening featured locally inspired meals and plenty of conversation, setting the tone for the days ahead, which will include school visits, coaching clinics, community activities, and cultural experiences.
As the sun set over Cape York, the spirit of partnership and respect was clear — the tour’s arrival was not just about sport, but about strengthening ties, celebrating culture, and honouring the people of Kowanyama.
