KOWANYAMA 2025

Kowanyama, 2025

Location: North QLD
Dates: 14th to 18th August 2025

Kowanyama, we’re coming back!

Kowanyama means “place of many waters” in the Yir Yoront language. The community includes the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront [or Kokomenjen] and Kunjen clans, who each have language and other cultural differences.

Kowanyama Aboriginal Shire consists of beautiful and unique wetlands and delta mangroves in the north, extending to the bushland forest country of the central peninsula.

Greater than 1000 people now live in Kowanyama, making it one of the largest communities on the Cape York Peninsula. Kowanyama's Aboriginal people continue to identify strongly with their ancestral countries and with the languages, stories, songs, dances, and histories associated with those countries.

This will be the Future Immortals Tour third time to Kowanyama and our team cannot wait to return to this beautiful community.

Tour Apparel Artwork

By Brenton Bowen, Guugu Yimithirr People

This piece is inspired by the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Kowanyama, a proud Aboriginal community on the Gulf of Carpentaria. The vibrant reds, oranges, and soft pinks reflect the stunning sunsets that grace the region each evening—moments of stillness, reflection, and connection to Country.

Flowing through the centre are strong songlines, representing the unbroken cultural pathways passed down through generations. These lines symbolise the strength of family, community, and the enduring spirit of Kowanyama’s people.

The circles and pathways throughout the artwork represent gathering places, kinship, and the ongoing connection to cultural beliefs, lore, and the Dreaming. Each symbol tells a story of resilience, identity, and deep respect for tradition.

This artwork is a celebration of Kowanyama’s past, present and future—a visual journey honouring the land, the people, and the stories that continue to shape this strong community.
