Power of a Yarn – Elders’ Brunch Brings Stories, Flowers, and Connection in Mareeba

As part of the Future Immortals Tour, a special Elders’ Brunch was held in Mareeba – a meaningful gathering centred on connection, culture, and community. Hosted by the Mareeba Historical Society, Mulungu Health Services, and UNSW’s Nura Gili, the event brought together Elders from across the region.

Set against the backdrop of Mareeba’s rich history, the brunch offered a space where generations could connect. Elders were invited to take part in a hands-on flower arranging session, creating beautiful pieces while talking with players and partners about life, culture, and the power of storytelling.

The event highlighted the importance of “having a yarn” – slowing down, listening deeply, and recognising the value of lived experience and wisdom in shaping strong communities.

For the touring team, it was a humbling and powerful experience. These conversations offered a deeper understanding of the region’s heritage, the challenges faced by local communities, and the resilience and pride that continues to thrive.

Special thanks to the Mareeba Historical Society, Mulungu Health Services, and UNSW Nura Gili for hosting and guiding the event with care and respect. Moments like these are at the heart of the tour – where sport meets story, and connection becomes legacy.
